This is neither a woody, nor a potato or a sid issue. The behaviour of LaTeX concerning page non-numbering with \pagestyle{empty} and \thispagestyle{empty} also depends on the other packages which are loaded at the beginning of the file, some of which can re-initialise page numbers. Have a look at

Hi: The format files should be in the texmf/web2c subdirectory. Have you run texconfig? I did sometimes get this problem running latex2e files, and I was able to get around this by: 1. creating a link of tex in /usr/bin to a file called latex2e and 2. in texmf/webc copying latex.fmt to late
