Hello again,
Good news... the problem is fixed. A friend of mine had the idea of prepending
"su -c root" to the start-stop-daemon line, thinking it might be a
permissions problem, and hey presto it works. Obviously init doesn't have
permission to start KDM with X or something.

I tried both runlevels 2 and 3, with
Greetings,
I've got a problem with KDM on a sid machine set to unstable
that is similar to the one filed in the bug tracker (#240027), and that
can be traced through various threads on groups.google.com, with no
solutions.
If I start up my machine, it goes to runlevel 3, and fails to start KDM.

Looks like I perhaps spoke a little too soon. I logged into KDE using
GDM and found all my menus to be screwed up. All text in every menu
seems to be skewed about half a line down from where it is supposed to
be. Any suggestions or workarounds for the KDM problem?
Peace,

Thanks Nathan... you were right on. I read that, installed gdm and have
gdm for the graphical login. I still wish I had kdm, but I'll be patient
and wait for the fix.
Peace,
DAVE

A few months back, after I installed the DRI/DRM modules, KDM stopped
working. I was, and am, able to run startx from the command line and
have a fully functioning xsession, though. Not too long after that
(before I had a chance to troubleshoot it), my computer went down hard

I run /etc/init.d/kdm start as root and it says 'done', but kdm doesn't run.
I can run gdm and kde just fine. I enabled verbose logging for kdm and got
the following in syslog, but it doesn't tell me much.
All config files for kdm are the .deb defaults and all kde packages are from
Sid as of 07:00
