I had managed to do this on a Mandrake 8.2 system. I have not tried on Debian
but it should work similarly. Here is what I did :
check that you have all the necessary softwares installed :
japanese locales
FreeWnn
Kinput2 for FreeWnn
Japanese fon

Unfortunately, this also had the effect of disabling Japanese
input; shift+space doesn't do anything anymore.
Is there a way to get an English interface with the ability to
input Japanese characters?
