Responding to my own post here as I got a command line cdrecord to work.

First of all, I don't think the 2.4.18-bf2.4 kernel has all the modules
you need for scsi-emulation. Find out for sure, and update ur kernel if
necissary (apt-get) (or u can compile ur own with the below modules).
