Just as an aside, the Debian way here would be:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

that should be pretty easy then..
make sure you have some of the basic packages installed:
apt-get install xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi xfonts-base xserver-xfree86
xbase-clients xserve

I am trying to install Debian on my computer, but it does not seem to
configure my monitor/videocard appropriately. When I startx from command
prompt, it says " (EE) Vesa(0): no matching modes. Mode screens found, but
none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found."
