I had the same problem, installing the Nvidia drivers with the
"--force-tls=classic" option did work, e.g.:
#sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run --force-tls=classic

I'm not a subscriber to this list, but I've found a fix for this problem

Quake 3, Armagetron, GL-117, Tux Racer, Tux Aqfh, Chromium,
der device class.
Initializing SDLGLDrv...

This is odd because both Quake3 and glxgears run normally at the same
frame rates as before. I am using debian sid, with XFree86 4.2.1-14. I
have the latest drivers from nVidia, and I haven
