Nice job. But what was the commandline you used for that screenshot?

I've been fighting with this for a couple of days now and getting
nowhere; any help would be much appreciated. I want to compile xterm
with 256-color support. I downloaded the source from Debian (which
comes as a small part of the MUCH larger xfree86 package), and

Are you sure that's not 8 bit color = 256 colors? I've never heard of
hardware that can display 256 bits per pixel = 2^256 colors.

That lists the choices that the server can make on startup. The actual
decision is logged, e.g., in /var/log/XFree86.0.log

The simplest way is
can anyone tell me how to build an xterm with 256 colors using the
debian source package? I'd just like a bit more flexibility -- and
I'd like to have the off-the-shelf values for emacs highlighting work
when I'm in a terminal.
