I was trying to update from a 2.4.27 kernel to the new 2.6.14 kernel and
kept getting the same error. I managed to fix it by running "apt-get
install initramfs-tools".

Just upgraded to the -2 version. Made my own initrd. A good question is why
lock the installation into the yaird stuff which may have some nice future
capabiities but to my mind is not working adequately now. Let me choose.

OK. The results.
First reboot panics. Need the boot= command in the initrd configuration. Since
I saw nothing like that in Yair's stuff, I made an initrd the old fashioned
way. (Need more documentation as to what can in the /etc/yaird files.)
This booted up fine. However:

This new yaird stuff uses files in new directory /etc/yaird
The Default conf file needs be edited BEFORE attempting the install :-)
1. I changed cpio to cramfs -- this means I want an initrd rather than
something else. :-)
