This turned out to be related to the libnss-mdns package and
modifications made to /etc/nsswitch.conf when it is installed. This
was done without asking me if I wanted to use multicast DNS as the
default protocol for resolving url's during the update.
I tried to install a deb of a commercial program (free for personal
use) called compupic on my system.
Trying to run it I get a segmentation fault. Running strace show that
it dumps just after reading /etc/nsswitch.conf. I don't think that it
is doing it internally since googling for that
