1. use knoppix to find the settings.
2. open the root bash cli
3. type this in:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install x-window-system-core
apt-get install x-window-system
apt-get install kde
startx

/I do this fairly often, here is how to do it:
1. open the synaptic package manager.
2. click file>save markings as
3. check save full state.
