when i boot debian, my net connection is up, and i can browse the web
fine, ping hosts,etc.
after a few minutes, i lose the connection. i cant ping external ips i
can only ping my router. i cant even acess the http server on my router.
ipconfig reveals no clues as to what is going

Which XF86config file? When dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 is
run, it writes to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
You'll also notice that in /etc/X11/XF86Config there is only one
entry, regarding naming the input device, but in
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 there exists all t

i boot up, and get command prompt login. can use all vitual termninals.
then i start x, with "startx" (with login manager i get the same
problem). x starts, then i try to go back to a virtual terminal, and all
i see is messed up lines going down my screen.

i just installed unstable on a machine. everything seems fine other than
the fact that i cant access http or ping any hosts other than my router.
is this perhaps because i have a http proxy installed?

It didnt work, particularly, the virtual teminals stopped working and
just showed up flickering garbage.

switch to a virtual terminal ctrl alt f1, ctrl alt f2, etc , i get
colored stripes down the screen, its just a mess. is this anything to do
with my X settings? surely not? is there any setting that changes how

solves your problem. If it does, add it to your /etc/lilo.conf (or what
boot loader you are using), and run /sbin/lilo.
