One of my monitors is connected via Displaylink, USB 2.0. This has always
worked perfectly but on upgrading to Buster, that monitor now only comes up

Inspired by a comment in another recent thread (I think by Greg Wooledge), I
decided to try and use a non-root X. Using Xfce, and unwilling to install gdm
(pulls in too much), I decided to disable lightdm (via /etc/X11/default-display
manager, and via systemctl).
