Is there a linux disk scan command to check the entire harddisk?

i didn't try the deb packages for apache+mysql+php.
but i did install & compile from source in woody machine,
and it works.

i downloaded the Woody CD image,
and installed succesfully.
The default installation kernel is 2.2.
how do i install kernel 2.4 from the CD?
or do i need to build the 2.4 kernel from scratch?
