Hi,
I did an 'apt-get update/upgrade' from sarge to etch. Everything went
fine. Then I wanted to upgrade my kernel. This command:
apt-get install linux-image-2.6.18-4-686
caused apt-get to want to uninstall grub and then install lilo. Why is
that happening? I'd like to keep grub. So, how do I pr

Hi,
I tried to uprade a dev server to etch today. The upgrade erred out on mysql
upgrades. I'm told I might want to run 'apt-get -f install'. I've played with
the force option before with bad results. Why are the libs that mysql depends
on not upgraded first? Would it be a better idea to uninst
Hi,
We've been running debian sarge for over a year now. My manager's reminders in

The proper daemon is running on his machine:

Well, I tried on a Dell PowerEdge 4400 with a RAID 5. The install went ok.

Hi,
We aquired a powervault 715N NAS server. It is running some form of windows
(most likely w2k). I don't have the manuals or an install disk. It doesn't
have a floppy or a cdrom. I'd like to install debian on it and make it a
samba server for the company. All it has is a serial port, two ethe

Hi,
My manager's computer hung up this morning. He's running sarge with two
monitors. We ssh'd in from another computer and ran top. We saw an instance
of kwin running that was hogging the cpu. We killed it. Now one of his
desktops is acting poorly. When he opens a terminal there is no title ba

Hi,
I installed some mysql 5 packages on my development server. I had to do a
--force-all to get them to install. I've tried three different ways to remove
the package but all fail (shown below). Any ideas on how to remove the
package?

Hello,
I apt-got mysql-server on two debian sarge machines. On the first machine,
mysql-server 5 was installed. The second machine, mysql-server 4 was
installed. They both have the same sources.list. Any ideas why this would
happen? How would I fix this?
Thanks,
Tom

When enter the command 'apt-get install ntp' I get the error: 404 Not Found
[IP: 64.50.236.52 80]. Yet, when I use a browser to check that ip address, it
works just fine. Furthermore, apt-get works fine on another machine behind
the same firewall. The apt-get command just stopped working for me.

I update our woody servers to r6 and our nfs suddenly stopped working. At
least the timing was about right. However, I didn't see anything in the
update that would effect nfs.
I restarted the nfs servers:

Hi,
When I ssh into my Debian (Woody) server from RH 9, why can't I use my HOME

Hi,
I have two machines that are identical in hardware. One is running RH 8.0
(kernel 2.4.18) and the other is running Debian Woody (kernel 2.4.26). The
machine running RH 8.0 shows all the USB ports in /proc/bus/usb. However, on
the machine running Debian, the /proc/bus/usb directory is empty.
Hi,
I am migrating our company servers from RH to Debian and one of the last
hurdles is the tape drive. We have an HP SureStore Dat40x6 tape drive that is
not being recognized under Debian. We are running Debian 3.0r2 and kernel
2.4.26. I have compiled in scsi support and scsi tape support.

resource consuming, and neither require more than proxie mapping on the
clients (no client side software to install). Proxy+ is the better of the
two and the smaller (resource wise) from my standpoint.
