What kernel are you upgrading from and to? You may need to use dhcpcd-sv
instead of the stock dhcpcd. An strace might be instructive.

Check dmesg (dmesg|less). Which 3Com card do you have? (which driver?) I use
the 3c95x as a module with 2.2.9, and I don't have that problem. Also,
manually insmoding if it's a module will tell you. Did you run depmod -a
after compiling?
