I've been poking through the debian bug tracking system and this list
off an on for a couple weeks new, but can't find any clues on how to fix
this.
Anyone got any ideas?

Try editing /etc/X11/Xsession.d/99xfree86-common_start and remove quotes
from around "$REALSTARTUP", like this:
#exec "$REALSTARTUP"

How would I go about upgrading to a 1.4.X version? Anyone done it and
