xternal modems can no longer be "guaranteed" to
work with Linux. This surely means, as RS232 types are superceded by USB
ones, that the traditional advice to use an external modem with Linux is no
longer the cure-all it once was.

Don't ask
me why the cost difference, but I would guess it's just marketing. What I
want is to avoid another rats nest of wires, boxes, and mains leads - I have
enough of those on/under/around my desk already.
