Can regular users also have boot scripts ?
Why not edit your user crontab to fetch mail? Very easy to do.
Been using that system for years. Slick!

edX does. I've got it running on a Millenium G200-SD 8 meg.
and before that a MGA PCI-2 2meg. Works great at 1600x1200 24bpp.

think xbase & xlib6 are still
nessesary if you compile any X programs from source. Just to make it easy on
yourself I'd include them if the packages state they need them, save yourself
a lot of problems, and arguments with dselect!

I think your smtp-server & news-server need to be something like;
smtp-server=smpt.best.com
news-server=news.best.com
substitude your isp's requirements here.
Using localhost would be a problem for an outgoing ppp conection.
(of course this is fine for your local mail!)
