compile time settings) and "*;*;*;Al-2400;audio" in
/etc/security/group.conf will give audio group privileges to users logging in
using kdm.

I had the same problem. When using larger, 10K RPM IBM disks such as DMVS18M
I experienced the same thing. Solution was to build aic7xxx module with
"Delay in seconds after SCSI bus reset" (CONFIG_AIC7XXX_RESET_DELAY) setting
set to 20 seconds. I don't know why reasonably modern disks have problems
with fast initializing.

You can even do it in completly opposite direction:
Find in dmesg which device is a cdrom drive
hdc: SAMSUNG CD-ROM SC-148F, ATAPI CDROM drive
and make a link
rm /dev/cdrom
ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom
