There is however still a problem with kernel 2.6.32-5 : rectangle of
random black and white pixels disappeared but gnome login screen

I've been trying to fix this disk for a week now, but everythin I tried hasn't
been working. I'm a linux starter however, so that doesn't help.
The drive in question is a 120G Maxtor that was housed in a NAS. After a power
outage the NAS reported the disk as empty. I took it out

It booted just fine on
an i386 netbook here.
Have you tried unetbootin to write iso to stick.
I used it a few times and it worked every time.
Install it with apt-get.

Nothing in " Applications - Sound & video "
It is available via command line and "create launcher" on the desk top.
