efault you ususally use the 0 key for everything. However, as with most things, you can use any of the 4 keys. This just gives wpa_supplicant the correct key to use. For ASCII strings, you do surround the string in quotes. HTH Doug Miller

I've noticed this as well.  In fact it only happens about half the time.  If I have my laptop off for a while it seems to fly by quickly without any lag.  I suspect its a dhcp client thing, but I have no reports or evidence to back it up.
