bro, if it's a command line program you can do this in the crontab:
@reboot /home/me/bin/myscript.sh
more info: http://team.macnn.com/drafts/crontab_defs.html
On some systems you can even start GUI programs with the @reboot
You'll have to test and depends a bit on startup order and desktop
I've been thinking of setting up a security/monitoring system for my home.
Does Debian have any packages or software to control web cams (motion
detect, recording, viewing, etc).
I need at least 6 cameras. I can get some really nice ones that work
under Windows for $90 each; but software (
uh, ok. Thanks
Why didn't aptitude find it?

What's the "linux" way of installing a Tight VNC Server?
On windows, I just run the exe; on freebsd I just install for ports
and/or packages.
Both take under 3 minutes.
I try 'apt-get install tightvnc' and it failed, saying there isn't a
Debian package for this?
.. that is strange. I tried i

I installed FreeBSD (minimal install) and also Solaris i386, from like 4
years ago.
Both of those work fine.
I tried re-install on just the SSD and when it goes though Grub it gives
some "Can not mount /dev/hda1" (or whatever the hard drive name is).

I'm trying to install on a Core2Duo with this:
debian-501-amd64-netinst
The two disk drives are SATA Seagate 500 Gigs and Sata Intel SSD 32 Gigs.
I boot off CD and install over network which works fine.
It asks if I want to install Grub and saves it's safe since it's the
only OS.
I say yes and
I'm looking for a web based monitoring tool.
mrtg isn't supported any longer?
I tried rtg, but it seemed like it was really complex to setup.
I just want a simple monitor that will graph cpu, memory, disk, etc.

Also, how do you make it 'reload' your windows and placement on login?
In KDE, if you logout and then log back in; it automatically brings up
your windows and in the order and placements in which you had them.
Thanks!

Along this lines, does anyone know of a program that can quickly send
out mass emails to a bunch of different addresses?

I use to run an older version of debian (and slackware) on a 486 (this
was about 8 years ago).
You could probably find a generic 486 somewhere cheap and/or for free!
Try to find a 486DX4 (100Mz, 50Mhz Bus) [I think this was the fastest
non-overdrive 486]
Or, maybe look for an old Pentium Pr
