How do I get rid of a package that won't purge

I am trying to get of a package using dpkg --purge but it won't saying package is in a very inconsistent state and must be reinstalled. Dpkg can't install the package. Now I am in a catch 22. Please help Bruce Jackson

I mdadd -a it works. When I mdrun -a I get the following error: /dev/md0: Invalid argument. The hardware is two IDE drives. The kernel was compiled using the kernel-source-2.0.36-2 source. Any help would be appreciated. -- Bruce Jackson Linux: because reboots are for hardware upgrades!
