understand what you are trying to accomplish, but this will backup the
my_data directory to my_backup.tar:

Use \$ rather than a plain $ to get # as root.
m mistaken there, or I've
messed things up elsewhere (but I don't know where).
By the way, address rewriting according to /etc/email-addresses does
take place.
