hi
maybe it is due to nvidia drivers. they are notoriously buggy. there are
a lot of complains regarding it causing x-lockups, and they never worked
for me. for example, while running X, if i switch to console, and then
back to X, it causes a lockup. you may try switching back to nv driver

i had this same problem because i was running devfsd, and nvidia device
files (/dev/nvidiactl char major 195 minor 255) would vanish on reboot.
the script makedevices.sh in nvidia kernel distribution used to make
this device. anyway, nvidia kernel always caused lockups for me, so i

i have ext2 but now i want to switch to reiserfs
i have an empty partition, which is not being used
now, i would like to copy the contents of /dev/hda5 (existing ext2
partition) to /dev/hda8 (new empty reiserfs partition). but i donot know
