Root Change Password

I'm trying to change the root password on my Debian 2.0 box. I log in as root, locally, and run passwd. Everything appears to change normally, but the password remains the same as before. Reboots do not seem to cure this. Please help! Thanks Adrian

I know -- but since X is configured to start up when the system boots, it just goes right back in. I can't shell! Heeellp! :-(
