My IDE controller users the PATA_SCH module in the Linux kernel. I am using
Debian 5.0 with 2.6.30 kernel from SID and I get some BUS error messages
related to PATA_SCH module in the dmesg.

No, you can't just rename the file. The package installation information
is kept in the database.
Try "--force-overwrite" option to dpkg.
