For some reason I have not been able to get the updates by running Synaptic for
the past two weeks. I also tried to get updates by opening Konsole and running
apt-get update. This also does not work.
How can I purge this and reload?

Uhm, how does he have reason when he is attributing actions to an entity
prior to its existence? That would be like me claiming that Brazil, in league
with Australia, were directly responsible for the fall of Rome and you saying
I had reason.
Would you believe it but bind9 had sweet nothing to do with the
problem. The issue lay in the interfaces configuration file all along.
In my email below I had configured eth0:0 but the IP address used in
this was actually the subnet ip. As soon as I removed this everything
went back to normal...

"debian-sys-maint" no longer has access to start/stop/restart/check
mysqld.
I thought that if I change the mysql password for debian-sys-maint
this would solve it but it seems there is a password stored somewhere
on the machine.
