Well, you could always subscribe to debian-security and

You may want to try gcj and kaffe. They are alternative Java tools
(gcj is a compiler, kaffe is a vm).
I haven't used the jdk in linux, but I did use gcj and kaffe with a
small threading demo.

Close any programs you don't want to run at startup. Open any you do
want to run at startup. Then Foot -> Settings -> Session -> Save
Session (or something like that).
This will work for all session aware programs (gnomecc is one of
them).

If any binary files can be exec as suid, then I would recommend
python. It will have more of the feel of a script with its high level
view of things.

blackdown java seems to be a lot slower than IBM, or even SUNs. Here is
some benchmarks (run on K-6, 300Mz, 196Mb, woody with 2.4 static
kernel):

Hi!
each time I boot my potato+helix_gnome box, the gnome control center
shows up. I surfed all the menus in order to disable this behavior, but
I didn't find anything. Could someone be so kind to tell me how disable it
at startup?
Thanks in advance!
Marcelo

Dear debianers
I am using mutt as my MTA. When I move between different mailboxes mutt
asks me the following question:
move read messages to /home/chiappa/mbox? ([n]/y):
I don't want to move anything because procmail takes care of the internal
distribution of emails. How can I disable this ann

I'm interested in finding a serial terminal software package for Debian
(such as "tip" on Solaris). Does any one know if there is a Debian package
that would fit my needs (direct connect to the serial port, dumb terminal
emulation) or do I need to compile up something myself?
Thanks,

Hi,
you can always go to the command line using ctrl+alt+F1-F6
(left ctrl and alt). You can always exit your X session with
ctrl+alt+backspace.
To stop X from starting automatically for always, you can do :
apt-get remove xdm (or wdm).
Just temporarily, I should say, make the startup scripts une
