I agree with everyone else's statement that BusLogic is Good, but there's
absolutely nothing wrong with Advansys. Advansys maintains the linux
driver and it should be a good one.
Adaptec and Diamond will work at the expense of some robustness.
I'll never buy them.

SUGGESTION: man tar
HINT: tar cvzf fi
$pwd

$tar zcvf ../files.tar.gz *
...
$cd ..
$ls files.tar.gz
files.tar.gz
$_
zcvf creates a gzipped tar file. "c" == create.
Make sure you put the new tarball outside of the directory you are
tarring or it will try and include the tar in itself creating a nasty
loop.

You are probably mounting the drive as `msdos' instead of `vfat'.

I have Adaptec 2940s in two of my Debian machines (one is our Debian
mirror) and have never had a problem. My cohorts at work use them in
a variety of situations with cd writers, scanners, etc. running
Windows 95 and NT. No complaints here.

If your ISP requires pap authentication, you need to uncomment the
+pap line in your options file.
Also he may not require you to run a script..
You might try taking out the login and password references in your script,
as ppp authentication should take care of it. My ISP does it this way.
