please consider updating ttf-dejavu to 2.14-1 it is mainly intended to
fix #408311 which causes text rendered using the sans-oblique variant
to look bad. IMHO it would be quite bad to have such problems in Etch
with a font used by so many people; note that the problem affects also

It'd be great if you could update ttf-dejavu (currently 2.11-1); it's
the main font used by the graphical-installer and the latest releases
contains a lot of fixes an improvements (see [1])
There are two options:
version 2.12-2: it fixes #401615 (which was blocked by #401924)
version 2.13-1:
