I have since discovered that my problem is the same bug as #261753.
Under that bug report, a work-around is given. This works OK also for me
(except that I put the .desktop file in the .hidden sub-directory of applnk,
since that's where KDE was itself putting the .desktop files.)

the problem is the -nolisten tcp in the Xservers file: kdm uses the
command for the remote query server as well. i have no really clever
idea now to fix it ...
please forward upstream.

hi,
i'm finding that both kde 3.2.(2?)'s systray applet AND superkaramba
0.33's systray are crashing on exit of systray'd applications.
to reproduce a crash, add four or five applications, then remove one
(by choosing quit from the systray's icon) add some more
google.com, located debian-kde@lists.debian.org, found july 2004
