Hello,
more or less by accident I have found the reason. The distorted appearance
comes from setting "Composit-Type" to Xrender and "Qt-System" to Nativ.
All other settings work. Especially for desktop effects OpenGL is needed.

i've found a fix:
edit /usr/share/gnome/applications/kde4/kmailservice.desktop and supply the
full path to kmailservice (/usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kmailservice) to the exec
command and it will work again.
i don't know who creates this path/files but it works after adding the full
path.

Also make sure in your KDE systemsettings that the nepomuk service is
activated.
I had the same problem when using KDE 4.4 but since KDE 4.7 it never occured

admin area, so of the 2.7 MB, there are 12 lines of SQL commands and
one line with 2.7MB length.
For comparison, nedit keeps usable, and never lags/freezes more than 1-2
seconds, with dynamic word wrapping on.
