Simply changing
LD_BIND_NOW=true start_kdeinit --new-startup +kcminit_startup
to
LD_BIND_NOW=true start_kdeinit_wrapper --new-startup +kcminit_startup
solves the problem, so I think I'll go that route while waiting for ksmserver
3.5.8 to migrate from
