The reported misbehaviour is peculiar to the terminal emulator lxterminal(1), almost certainly due to the fact that wmii_3.9.2+debian-3 is encapsulating the terminal invocation inside setsid(1). A standard emulator like lxterm(1), i.e., the locale-sensing wrapper for xterm(1), does not exhibit this
