Isn't
Provides: aleph
also needed?

Sorry, aren't the texlive people talking about mex? I always thought
that it was settled that aleph "belongs" to
or what it's changed to. What are the pros

I'm against changing TeX's aleph. It would be against the upstream
decision. And knowing the information Paul gave, I suggest not to
rename to afnix, but to something like aleph-runtime or similar.

we don't need to wait for NEW
processing (but you RMs might have a magic wand to speed up that?)

remove aleph from testing - any NMUing won't make
sense without doing the actual work of packaging afnix.
To me it seems as if the current situation is better than having no
aleph/afnix at all. However, it violates the release policy.
What should we do?

I object to that - if there *is* an upstream documentation, duplicating
this in README.Debian is superfluous (and even harmful, because it
distracts people from the cases wher
document it, please us a specific wording. "a bunch of
font related issues" means approximately nothing, please say whether
there are errors, or warnings, or wrongly displayed characters, and in
what cases this occurs.

Do you know which files in ConTeXt would have to be changed?

Maybe you have some files installed in /usr/local/share/texmf, or your
