I tested Xawtv here, and I have the same experience:
* Sound works fine;
* Image is just noise;
* BTTV is loaded fine, other tv-app works just fine.
Also, in the documentation I read: "Don't expect you can use xawtv
without reading the documentation at least once." This is obviously not

pushling provided me with another strace, of the case where xawtv was
functioning (with the symlink in place, as described above); the strace
is attached.
When comparing it to the strace of the failing xawtv, it turns out that
in the strace
