Okay, so I've found a workaround for my printing problem. If enter the following: lpadmin -p MY_PRINTER_NAME -o usb-no-reattach-default=true and restart the printer, then printing seems to work properly. So I guess the Lexmark E238 needs to be added to the printer quirks list in usb-libusb.
