I have the exact same problem. The only way to switch workspace was the
workspace
menu (I didn't try mouse button 2, didn't know that trick). I am using LinuxPPC
R5, and I was getting the same results from R4.
I've sent a bug report to www.windowmaker.org. A second testimony could help,
maybe?

Maybe you would like to apply this patch. It worked for me (and it wasn't
before).
