I'm probably going to put debian on my laptop (i've recently been converted
from redhat/ yellowdog loyalties).
just wondering if anyone knows much about gcc3 - for example, i've heard it can
generated binaries optimised for altivec. if this is the case, would it be

the problem i believe is that the ibook cd plauer is not connected directly to
the soundcard as in a pc. to play a cd, you need to stream the data off the cd
and precess it into audio with a program like alsaplayer or xmms.

i'm interested in setting up a dual head, non mirrored XFree86 config on a
rev A/ rage 128 tibook.

Not sure about the problem, but if you want to use alsa, you should
cetainly use the 0.9 version as 0.5 is now deprecated. Not sure if they
are available from apt-get - i built them from source. but there are
0.9rc5 debs here:

sounds like you mean windows network shares (samba). if so, you need to specify
the smbfs mount type, not smb, e.g.
mount -t smbfs -o username=foo //a_pc/a_share /localmountpoint
not /sure/ which packages you'll need.

untarred it and ran the install script you get, as root. then i installed it
for each user by running
/usr/local/OpenOffice.org1.0.1/setup
as that user.

there is xf86config or you can re-run the debconf system
using:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
also garnome is 2.1 ... i found it is pretty cool. (well i prefer
windowmaker but if you're into gnome its great!)

I find the trackpad on my tibook to be more difficult to control
than it was under macos. Is there a way to emulate the macos trackpad
behaviour more closely? I'm using windowmaker. I've tried changing the
mouse settings, but it always seems a bit hard to control.
