Just wanted to say thanks Matheiu for all of your work with PPC and staying
on top of a lot of these bugs!

I run all sorts of PowerPC machines with various versions of Debian and I
don't see that coming to end anytime soon. These are excellent and
reliable machines. Biggest issues/hurdles are just graphics at the moment
for both ATI/AMD and Nvidia cards, but even if that is never resolved/fixed

Adrian,
Was this installation image taken down by chance? I'm not able to reach
anything at the URL. I am able to browse your ~glaubitz directory, however.
Once this image is available, I will be more than happy to test and
contribute on a couple different G5 machines.

Adrian may be able to provide further guidance on ppc specific images though.

Dennis,
You'll definitely want to make sure to retain the windfarm module as one of
it's particular functions is controlling and regulating the G5 fans'
speeds. If you don't, you'll hear the fans blowing at top speed
indefinitely, which sounds like a jet engine taking off except in this case

I've been running Debian unstable on a number of PPC and PPC64 machines for
the past few months. After the transition of the of PPC from the main
Debian archive to Debian Ports, I'm no longer receiving updated kernel
images.

As I suspected, the answer was more than simple enough. I appreciate you
taking the time to answer my questions. I'm good to go.
Thanks,

Ooops. No reply all. Anyways, regarding the SSL certificate issues,
have you verified that the time
and date on your system are correct? I'm assuming Iceweasel if your
choice of browser or are you using something else? Not entirely sure
about the cron issue though.

On my dual core G5, I have to disable hardware acceleration when using the
nouveau driver by adding this to my yaboot parameters.
nouveau.noaccel=1
If that works, you'll want to add this to your /etc/yaboot.conf file as the
last line under your default kernel (probably named Linux) as well to make
Wherever you do place this pre-compiled kernel, I'll gladly test it on my
dual core G5 with an FX4500. I've beating my head against the wall on this
one for the past couple of weeks. I'm nowhere near knowledge on the matter
though, so basically just feeling in the dark and doing a lot of reading
Peter,
I did a fresh install of Jessie with LXDE and then installed the kernel
image and headers you uploaded on my G5 (11,2) with a Quadro FX4500 Nivida
card. After adding an entry in yaboot.conf and running sudo ybin -v, I
rebooted successfully to the login screen without having to pass in any
Hello Peter,
I might actually have a 6600 and 7800 laying around so if I can I post results
of those as well, but it may be just a couple of days.
Of the three issues I will start with the first. I will touch base with the
nouveau developers and see if they can revisit the issue soon and offer
Hi Richard,
The question almost everybody is going to ask is what kind of graphics card
do you have in your G5? Is it dual headed?

Have you ruled out the possibility of a hardware issue either with your
monitor, video card port(s), and video cable itself? Sometimes bent or
missing pins on the video cables or loose connections can cause such
problems. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Peter,
I wish I had a good answer for you regarding relevant and useful benchmark
tools, but I just wanted to add that I would like to try and do the same
thing for PPC G4 machines using their architecture specific compilation
flags as well to see what difference it makes. I'll report back on my

Would you be able to post the full dmesg log? Might help track this one
down a bit quicker. I'm assuming you installed a version of Jessie (8.0 -
8.2)?
You updated your yaboot.conf to boot from the new kernel (or you are
specifying it from boot yaboot menu at startup)?
Thanks,

I'm in the same boat and unfortunately haven't found the time to sail my way

It may only read CDs as my G4 only did until I upgraded to better CD/DVD drive.
If the cd is stuck in the CD drive that's internal to your G4 you should be
able to boot to Open Firmware and use the following command at the OF prompt.
eject cd

So the initial install of Wheezy went okay? Do you mean the crash happened
while updating your /etc/yaboot.conf file with the new initrd info? Can
you boot into rescue mode off of the installer and mount your /boot and
update things accordingly?
