Why? The X server generally tries to behave as requested, and if
that's
not possible, it aborts. Even if you don't like this

Cool. You could also try to raise it again to 16 if you want. But first use it

OK, the next time you log in, you should get more than just an xterm.

It seems that gnome-core doesn't get everything you want. Apt-get these, too:
apt-get install gnome-control-center gnome-help gnome-panel gnome-session

Oh, also the arrow keys put in 2, 4, 6, and 8 instead of being arrow
keys...
And, --list doesn't seem to be valid syntax for update-alternatives.

Try apt-get install gnome
Amazingly enough, it launched an xterm when I logged in. Now the only
problem is that the key mappings are wrong. Everything works fine
except for the spacebar and capslock keys. The capslock key is dead,
and the spacebar acts as two spaces and the capslock key. Also, I have

Seems that you don't have any X programs installed. I don't know if y

Apple Valkyrie Video (valkyriefb)
The video chip in the Performa 6400 and the PowerMacintosh 6400/6500 is
codename Valkyrie. It is an internal Apple chip, the only acceleration

Ah OK. So Xpmac is unsupported, but valkyrie device

I actually didn't compile it - I found a .deb and installed it using
dpkg. I turned authorization off as you said, and now I get a

I think that the Xpmac server doesn't allow this -- trick (but
it is Control and Opt and Function key; I assume you typoed that above.)

The Opt-F1,F2,etc trick wasn't working, and neither does this.
To those who wanted the logs, it was actually at /var/log/xdm.log
And, to those who are saying that it's unsupported, the 'real' X server
doesn't seem to support valkyrie video devices.
The log follows:
