are you still having problems? I have an imac f.p. and I am strongly
considering an ibook but I am getting scared.

Maybe as user you're not allowed to start X ? You can use login managers such
as xdm, gdm or kdm for this.

I just realised that I am able to start X as root, but X
crashes to console when I try and login as a user??
Any ideas?

I have upgraded the drm-trunk-modules and I am getting the exact same
problem, ie. X begins to load and then crashes to console...even with
your X config., and its giving the same error.
