/dev/cdrom was a link pointing to the wrong place. After a little
poking around, I figured it was at /dev/hdc. Listening to a CD right now!

related messages. Post that if it doesn't make complete sense.
It seems strange to me that your cdrom drive would be hde. Do you have
disks on hdb thru hdd?

necessity to read the digital audio. The problem is that (in 2.6.5) the
applications don't even see the /dev/cdrom. In 2.4.25, the CD "plays",
but since I don't have audio working there, I can't hear the audio.

Firewire. A Pismo. I'm running a very up-to-date sarge.
I have a couple of kernels booting, a 2.4.25, and a 2.6.5. In my
2.4.25, my system has no problem recognizing audio CDs in the drive.
But ALSA isn't working
