for audio you need to run this 'modprobe snd-aoa-i2sbus' then 'alsamixer'
set the PCM channel
Also when you install firmware-b43-installer if when you do 'lsmod' and see
that b43 is loaded, just reload it and wireless should be good.
modprobe -r b43
modprobe b43

Here's the output of lspci -vvv: http://pastebin.com/raw/aQSVwyUW
I also have Network Manager installed. Anything I need to do there or with any
network config files?

Various components and scripts load by the installer are crashing. This is
most likely due to a broken toolchain during build. It could be related

From the installer menu, choose "Execute a shell". Then run the "bash" command
to get a proper shell.
From there, navigate to /var/log and locate the syslog file. You should be able
to upload that file using the scp command.

I don't think it's an HDD issue.
Can you try to provide the /var/log/syslog file from the installation process?
This will include the actual error messages.

Alright, now I'm getting a "target installation failed" on the "Install base
system" phase. I think it's an issue with my HDD - I never tested it before I
installed it. Going to swap in a known good one in a bit.

I actually installed it onto an external Firewire drive. I also don't think at
all that this is relevant because the firmware issues usually only existed
on MacOS
May I ask two things:
1) did you have the original Apple hard drive and if so, how did you format it?
2) what operating system did you burn the ISO with and how

Ok, that should definitely work. I did install Debian successfully
on a very similar (or even identical?) PowerBook G4 in the past [1].

That might be the ticket. Current the drive is a pull from an old Thinkpad. Is
there any way to put the Apple firmware on?

hardware configuration. I know that installing Debian on Powerbooks
worked in the past, except for some very old models which the Linux

Hi guys,
I've spent the last few days attempting to install Debian on some old
Powerbooks I have laying around. They're all invariably failing, and I have no
clue why. Some hang on loading the partition formatter, others cannot get past
"Install the base system" (debootstrap return value 1). I'
