M5183 is not an absolute identifier - it identifies the form factor rather than
the specific model. It's probably a PowerMac G4 "Yikes" . Was it running Mac
OS 9 when you were given it? The Apple System Profiler under the Apple menu
would tell you for sure. If it has PCI graphics it's a Yike

Been there, done that (and not just on PPC).
When I find the installer stuck, I run "ps -ef f" which shows graphically
the process tree. Typically, the one that is indented the most is the one
that is hung, then I run "kill -15 $PID_of_offender" (PID is normally the
second column).
