I run one of these with the 2.6.8 kernel. However, I started with a clean install from a recent Sarge CD, and didn't have any problems. I use gnome rather than KDE, so I can't say for certain that KDE will work, but it sounds like your problems are happening way before KDE launches. Another note

I'm trying to install debian-powerpc on an iMac 233 MHz/B. I'm trying to get it up to a 2.6 kernel so I can install a D-Link DWL-122 USB wireless adapter, but that's a whole different kettle o' fish. The story so far: I used the first disk of Debian powerpc Woodyr0 to install the base system
