okay, reporting back in on this...
using the 2.6.26.5 kernel from the debian kernel snapshot repo, the system
successfully boots up!
however, there seems to be another, perhaps more subtle problem lurking
in this kern

2.6.26 kernels, due to what appears to be a kernel bug which has been
fixed upstream).

i installed debian on my new ps3 using the debian-live based installer
from keshi.org, and then attempted to dist-upgrade my way to lenny.
