Ok, so I compiled a kernel with all the ALSA stuff enabled as a module, and I
can get the mixers to work and the computer DOES play sound... it just plays
garbage (kinda like a heartbeat monitor with ALOT of static).

I've discovered that man doesn't seem to use the preformatted pages from
the cat heirarchy in /var. It always goes back to the source and
reformats. Man does diligently save the formatted pages in /var when
exiting, however.
Is this known behavior? Any suggestions?

Thanks for the pointer. In general, if I stumble across further
dependency problems, is there a central place to look for the pointers to
packages not yet included in the official tree? Or is the best thing to
