mysteriously changing mac address

eth0 hw ether 00:05:02:b7:63:d8 to change it back, it became 00:01:00:05:02:B7. The first 32 bits of my real mac address are stuck onto the end of the field! Has anybody ever seen anything like this before? The next thing I am going to try is what address it uses if I reboot. Thanks for all help.
